What started out as promotional website images hosted on Flickr, have proliferated on the internet! They have gathered hundreds of thousands of notes and reblogs on Tumblr, have littered countless Pinterest boards, and pop up in all sorts of places. Interestingly, they have been used by various companies and organisations to advertise a whole manner of events and products. They have appeared in books, and on billboards, posters and bus shelters worldwide. Some of these images were projected on stage by Motley Crue during Girls Girls Girls on their 2014 world tour! Some of these images have even inspired tattoos! Many people assume these photographs are actually vintage and may not realise the legalities of their use. However the images have also been used by established companies that should know better than to use copyright images without permission. Despite the original images stating copyright and linking to the photographer David Woolley, as many things go in this internet age, the use of these images are out of control and they are constantly being used without permission. As such, despite the popularity of these images, the photographer has not received any payment or credit. To pursue copyright breaches is stressful, time consuming and expensive, so unfortunately these things often occur without consequence. Whilst the inspiration for tattoos is flattery and not a copyright breach, please remember these images are owned by David Woolley and their direct use without permission breaches copyright. Unauthorised use devalues the work of not only this photographer, but all photographers and artists who deserve payment for the use of their creations. If you are interested in using images, or any artistic content you find online, please contact the photographer or copyright owner before use.
